TUN DR SITI HASMAH KEMBALI KE RAHMATULLAH PADA USIA 100 TAHUN, PERGINYA SEORANG DOKTOR YANG HIDUP SEABAD BERSAMA MALAYSIA

Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali kembali ke Rahmatullah di Institut Jantung Negara (IJN) pagi ini pada usia 100 tahun.

Berita pemergian beliau disahkan oleh anaknya, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir.

Ramai mengenali Tun Dr Siti Hasmah sebagai isteri kepada Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Selama lebih dua dekad beliau berada di sisi suaminya ketika Tun Mahathir menjadi Perdana Menteri dari 1981 hingga 2003, sebelum kembali sekali lagi apabila Tun Mahathir menerajui kerajaan pada 2018 hingga 2020.

Namun perjalanan hidup Hasmah sendiri sudah cukup panjang sebelum nama Mahathir menjadi begitu besar dalam politik Malaysia.

Beliau dilahirkan pada 12 Julai 1926 di Kampung Jawa, Klang, Selangor dan merupakan anak keenam daripada sepuluh beradik. Bapanya, Haji Mohd Ali merupakan seorang pegawai kerajaan, manakala ibunya, Hajah Siti Khatijah Ahmad seorang suri rumah.

Selepas Perang Dunia Kedua, beliau mendapat biasiswa untuk belajar perubatan di King Edward VII College of Medicine di Singapura. Pada zaman peluang wanita Melayu memasuki bidang perubatan masih sangat kecil, Hasmah merupakan satu-satunya pelajar wanita Melayu dalam kumpulannya.

Di situlah beliau bertemu seorang pemuda dari Kedah bernama Mahathir Mohamad.

Mereka sama-sama belajar dalam bidang perubatan dan hubungan itu akhirnya membawa kepada perkahwinan pada Ogos 1956. Hasmah menamatkan pengajiannya sebagai doktor pada 1955 dan menjalani latihan di Hospital Besar Kuala Lumpur sebelum berpindah ke Alor Setar selepas berkahwin.

Pasangan itu kemudiannya membesarkan tujuh orang anak iaitu Marina, Mirzan, Melinda, Mokhzani, Mukhriz, Maizura dan Mazhar.

Kalau Tun Mahathir kemudian dikenali melalui dunia politik, Hasmah pula sudah membina kerjayanya dalam bidang perubatan dan kesihatan awam.

Pada 1965, beliau menjadi wanita pertama dilantik sebagai Pegawai Perubatan dalam Bahagian Kesihatan Ibu dan Anak di Kedah. Pada 1974, beliau sekali lagi mencipta sejarah apabila menjadi wanita pertama dilantik sebagai Pegawai Kesihatan Ibu dan Anak Negeri.

Kena ingat, ini zaman kemudahan kesihatan di kawasan luar bandar masih belum seperti hari ini. Sebahagian tugas Hasmah melibatkan kempen kesihatan, penjagaan ibu mengandung, kesihatan bayi dan kanak-kanak serta usaha membawa perkhidmatan kesihatan kepada masyarakat luar bandar.

Beliau bersara daripada perkhidmatan kerajaan pada 1979 dan kemudiannya menjadi pensyarah sambilan di Fakulti Pergigian Universiti Malaya sehingga 1981.

Menariknya, ada satu perkara tentang nama beliau yang hanya diketahui ramai ketika usianya sudah hampir mencecah satu abad.

Walaupun rakyat Malaysia sudah berpuluh-puluh tahun mengenalinya sebagai Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, beliau sendiri mendedahkan pada 2024 bahawa nama yang diberikan kepadanya ketika lahir sebenarnya cuma Hasmah.

“Siti” bukan sebahagian daripada nama asalnya.

Beliau menjelaskan bahawa beliau dilahirkan hanya dengan nama Hasmah. Namun nama Siti Hasmah sudah digunakan begitu lama sehingga itulah nama yang akhirnya melekat dan dikenali hampir seluruh rakyat Malaysia.

Apabila Tun Mahathir menjadi Perdana Menteri pada 1981, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah turut menggunakan kedudukannya untuk memberi perhatian kepada isu kesihatan, kebajikan, wanita, perancangan keluarga dan penyalahgunaan dadah.

Pada 1985, beliau menghadiri First Ladies’ Conference on Drug Abuse di Washington selepas menerima jemputan Nancy Reagan. Dua tahun kemudian, beliau mewakili Malaysia dalam persidangan antarabangsa mengenai penyalahgunaan dan pengedaran dadah di Vienna.

Pada 1995 pula, Hasmah mengetuai delegasi Malaysia ke Persidangan Dunia Mengenai Wanita Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu di Beijing.

Sepanjang hidupnya beliau turut memegang pelbagai jawatan dalam pertubuhan kesihatan dan kebajikan. Antaranya Presiden Persatuan Pandu Puteri Malaysia, Pengerusi Persatuan Perancangan Keluarga Kedah dan Presiden Yayasan Persatuan Perubatan Malaysia.

Beliau juga mempunyai sisi yang jauh daripada dunia protokol dan majlis rasmi.

Hasmah cukup meminati muzik. Beliau bermain piano dan biola, malah kembali bermain biola selepas meninggalkannya selama puluhan tahun. Ketika usia sudah lanjut pun beliau masih mahu belajar benda baharu. Beliau pernah mempelajari bahasa Perancis dan turut belajar bermain alat muzik tradisional Cina, erhu.

Pada 2003, beliau dianugerahkan Seri Setia Mahkota Malaysia yang membawa gelaran Tun. Ketika itu, beliau menjadi isteri Perdana Menteri Malaysia pertama menerima darjah tersebut.

Kemudian datang satu pencapaian yang mungkin sukar dibayangkan ketika Hasmah mula-mula memasuki kolej perubatan selepas Perang Dunia Kedua.

Pada 12 Julai 2026, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah genap berusia 100 tahun. Dua hari sebelumnya, Tun Dr Mahathir menyambut ulang tahun kelahirannya yang ke-101.

Hanya beberapa minggu lalu, pasangan itu turut meraikan ulang tahun perkahwinan mereka yang ke-70. Hubungan yang bermula ketika dua orang anak muda belajar perubatan di Singapura pada penghujung 1940-an bertahan selama tujuh dekad.

Pagi ini, perjalanan Hasmah akhirnya sampai ke penghujungnya pada usia satu abad.

Beliau lahir ketika Tanah Melayu masih berada di bawah pemerintahan British. Beliau melalui zaman Perang Dunia Kedua, menyaksikan kemerdekaan, pembentukan Malaysia dan segala perubahan negara sehingga ke abad ke-21.

Dan seorang wanita bernama Hasmah yang sempat menyaksikan sendiri hampir satu abad perjalanan Malaysia.
